The sparsely populated state of Amapa in the far north of Brazil is proud of its record of protecting the environment and taking the lead in the demarcation of territories for indigenous peoples. More than two-thirds of its territory is protected, and it has the highest percentage area of virgin forest out of all the states in the Amazon region, so tourism infrastructure is being developed at a slow and careful pace.
